Books About Town project, run by the National Literacy Trust, celebrates London’s rich literary connections and reading for leisure. Throughout summer, 50 uniquely designed benches were placed around the city for the public to enjoy.
I designed the Mary Poppins bookbench, entitled The East Wind, which illustrates the Banks household’s first encounter with everyone’s favourite nanny. Mary Poppins’ magical adventures with the four Banks children are shown on the back, inspired by the events in both the book and film. She was also there to give out books during an event organised by Kumon UK, who sponsored the bookbench.
The bench was displayed outside St Paul’s Cathedral, where the Bird Woman sells breadcrumbs at a tuppence a bag for the doves and pigeons.
